How-To Get That BBQ Flavor: A Recipe Collection for All Seasons

Spring and Summer are my favorite times of the year, not only because I love warm weather, but because it's the time of year when the BBQ grill comes out and stays out. I love to grill, but I also love BBQ flavor. It doesn't always have to come from the grill. Slathering BBQ sauce on a piece of meat is not the only thing BBQ is about.

Check out these year-round recipes that take the BBQ flavor beyond the grill (or still on the grill because, after all, there's nothing like a crisp chicken leg covered in gooey BBQ sauce from the grill).

Snacks & Appetizers

BBQ Roasted Mixed Nuts Recipe by Tracey at The Kitchen is my Playground

Tracey at The Kitchen is my Playground takes her "lick the inside of the chip bag kind of love" to a healthier level with this barbecue roasted mix nuts recipe.

Loaded BBQ Chicken Sweet Potato Fries Recipe by Housewives of Frederick County

In a perfect world, I'd love to make everything from scratch, but my world is perfectly imperfect. Even Pam & Terri of the Housewives of Frederick County, have found that sometimes shortcuts are okay, so long as they don't compromise the recipe's quality.

Using frozen sweet potato fries made from all natural ingredients, chicken breasts, your favorite BBQ sauce, onions, cilantro and feta cheese, this delectable, sharable loaded BBQ chicken sweet potato fries appetizer recipe is ready in under an hour.

More often than not, I would serve these as an appetizer or snack versus a dinner. I wonder if they freeze well? I shall ask. They look delicious! I'd probably have to sneak the green onions in the beef mixture so that they're not visible. If you're not a fan of beef, you can substitute any ground meat (pork, chicken, turkey, venison, bison) in this barbecue beef cups recipe. It's another dish ready in less than 30 minutes!

Everyday Savvy's delicious recipe for barbecue beef sliders with Memphis slaw would make a great appetizer, lunch or dinner. It includes Weight Watchers points calculations. The recipe uses canned biscuits, ground beef and BBQ sauce, plus there is an easy-peasy recipe for the Memphis slaw.

Oh my yum! I could eat these for breakfast, lunch dinner or snack! It definitely qualifies as a hidden vegetable recipe in my book. I could totally get Travis to eat these gluten-free cheesy BBQ casserole bites. Using pre-prepared BBQ chicken, this 5 ingredient recipe is ready in just 20 minutes. I REALLY want to tell you what's in it, but it's worth heading over to Almost Supermom to find out!

Hold your horses! Regardless of your loyalty to your favorite NFL team, the "Keep Pounding Carolina Panthers" BBQ chicken dip recipe is a tailgating must-have, even if you're hosting the tailgate party in your home. With just 7 ingredients, this tasty dish is ready in about 35 minutes. I bet it would be great with some refried beans!

Muffins, muffins, muffins! Apparently the theme works well with the barbecue flavor. Farmhouse BBQ Muffins are made with ground turkey, though any ground meat will do. Sheena at Hot Eats and Cool Reads refers to them as "cheesy sloppy joes baked in a cup" with a BBQ flavor.

Travis hates vegetables (anything green) and could live on mac & cheese. One of our shared vices when it comes to food is pizza. When Nicholas was in elementary/middle school he used to love going to the pizza buffet. That's when I was introduced to "mac & cheese" pizza, but it was nothing like this.

Using shells & cheese, chicken, BBQ sauce, shredded cheese and green onion (which I would really have to hide), Thrifty Jinxy serves up the perfect mac and cheese barbecue chicken pizza. If you make your own pizza dough, you can make this for under $10 (even less if you already have some of the ingredients on hand).

Tracey from The Kitchen is my Playground prepared this yummy sweet and spicy pulled pork BBQ pizza using prepared BBQ pulled pork. You don't always have to slave over a smoker for nearly an entire day to enjoy BBQ pulled pork. Not only can you pick up prepared pulled pork at the grocery store, but you can grab a tub at your favorite BBQ joint.

After that, just add red onion, mozzarella cheese, goat cheese and a sprinkling of fresh cilantro (or hide the cilantro under the toppings - minced finely, of course - if you dine with some who hates veggies).

Oh my YUM! I'm salivating over this cheesy-BBQ deliciousness. My teenage son, on the other hand, apparently has a pizza limit...SAID NO TEENAGER EVER. We literally had pizza 3 times in one week. They were different pizzas; each pizza having different crusts and different toppings, but my teenager is WEIRD.

That's why I'd love to make homemade pizzas like this BBQ chicken pizza recipe with homemade BBQ sauce that uses cilantro, red onion and extra sharp cheddar plus monterey jack cheese prepared deep-dish pizza style. I would love to have a deep-dish pizza skillet made of cast-iron.

I love Hawaiian pizzas and so does Travis. Unfortunately, Nicholas won't eat pineapple. He's missing out! This BBQ chicken, bacon and pineapple flatbread recipe is a healthier version of a pizza. It's gluten-free and uses a paleo-friendly crust. Since it uses cheese, it's not 100% Paleo friendly, but I'm sure you could adapt it if you're looking for something Paleo friendly.

These BBQ pizza bagel bites make a great after-school snack for tweens and teens. It uses store-bought, pre-cooked, seasoned and shredded barbecue pork as the base on top of mini bagels or bagel bites with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, red onion (optional) and fresh cilantro.

Casseroles and One-Dish Meals

Casseroles and one-dish meals are a favorite of mine because they're usually fairly effortless. Best of all, it's so much easier to clean up. Check out these casserole and one-dish meal recipes that are all about the barbecue flavor.

Cowboy Brisket Casserole Recipe by the Tiptoe Fairy Blog

Brisket is not a food I associate with quick or easy, but Stephanie from The Tip Toe Fairy uses prepared brisket and barbecue sweet corn from the freezer section to make this Cowboy Brisket Casserole Recipe. With only a few more ingredients, this dish is prepped and ready to serve in 30 minutes!!

Nachos are a go-to meal in our household, but they're always the same. It's always tortilla chips, ground beef, taco flavor and toppings. This BBQ chicken sweet potato nachos recipe is bound to shake up nacho night.

BBQ recipes don't always have to be accompanied by slaws, fries, beans and buns. Jordyn of Almost Supermom uses her cast-iron skillet to serve up a chicken, bacon, broccoli and quinoa skillet topped with ooey-gooey, melty BBQ cheddar sauce.

Rice is one of those ingredients that just doesn't reheat well, no matter what kind. In this quick BBQ beef and black bean chili recipe, the rice is prepared separately, then mixed in. If you use smaller portions, especially ready-to-serve rice, this is not only a great dinner, but can make a fantastic leftover lunch; especially since we all know chili tastes better the next day and the day after, and after. Hickory BBQ sauce is the secret BBQ ingredient in this recipe.

Slow Cooker

I love set it and forget it meals. Slow cooker BBQ is one of my faves. You can go traditional style and make BBQ sandwiches (with chicken, pork and turkey) or you can top a pizza, a baked potato, a salad or even mix it in with a pasta. Plus, slow cooker BBQ meats freeze well, so you can prep meals ahead of time and then just thaw, heat and serve.

Thrifty Jinxy's recipe for slow cooker BBQ pulled chicken is packed with flavor and needs no accompaniments other than a cold, sliced dill pickle and some homemade potato chips.

If you're low on spices or you're just looking for a simple slow cooker pulled BBQ chicken recipe, this one is for you. 3 ingredients meet the slow cooker and 6-hours later, VOILA!

This grilled barbecue bacon meatloaf sandwich recipe reminds me of a popular burger joint in Atlanta called the Vortex. It was the first place I ever tried a fried egg on my burger and it's one of my favorite toppings on a burger (any kind of "burger"). The BBQ sauce used in this recipe is heavenly. Add an onion roll, a runny fried egg, bacon, onion and cheese and it's heavenly. Serve this for Father's Day!

Tony Chcachere's Spice N' Herbs plus a homemade root beer based BBQ sauce gives everyday chicken OOMPH with this grilled chicken with root beer sauce from Greta's Day.

I'm a huge fan of meals that have simple ingredients, take less than 30 minutes and you can kinda set it and forget it. This easy bacon BBQ chicken recipe not only uses chopped bacon (which makes more sense than wrapping it to me -- because with wrapped bacon dishes, the bacon always tends to come off in large "slabs" per se), but it also has BBQ sauce, CHEESE and jalapenos (two of my faves).

And the award for best dressed pulled BBQ chicken sandwich recipe goes to Stephanie from Simple Acres courtesy of All She Cooks. Stephanie recommends a pretzel bun or ciabatta roll for serving. This pulled chicken recipe with homemade BBQ sauce is served with shredded cabbage, bell pepper, kale, onions, tomatoes or radishes (or all of the above) giving a pulled BBQ chicken sandwich a healthier twist + a light ranch or house dressing.

4 ingredients prepared in a skillet in 20 minutes. I think that says it all! Whether you're craving quick BBQ flavored pork chops and don't feel like whipping out the grill, it's too cold outside, you live in an apartment where grilling is just not easy or you don't have a grill this easy skillet BBQ pork chops recipe is a cinch.

Shrimp, fish rub, liquid smoke, lentils and onions; topped with a mixture of BBQ sauce, molasses, two tablespoons of whiskey and brown sugar, make this Shrimp Over Lentils with A Spicy Molasses BBQ Sauce Recipe a great choice for a Meatless Monday dinner in under 30 minutes.

Bacon Wrapped BBQ Scallops Recipe by Kraft Recipes
I've made scallops exactly ONE time. They're hard to perfect; at least according to Gordon Ramsey. I'd be willing to give this bacon-wrapped BBQ scallops recipe a try. It might be easier on the grill. It's hard to screw things up on a grill. Plus, wrapped in bacon and smothered in BBQ sauce, the "seafood" flavor is more subtle.

Side Dishes

Lori at Lori's Culinary Creations whipped up this simple slow cooker barbecue beans recipe in honor of her nephew's birthday. She used canned pinto beans and white beans along with Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce (a fave in our household not only for the flavor, but for the deals we get that allow us to stock up on savings), green bell pepper that can be a totally hidden veggie, green onion, garlic powder, ketchup, red wine vinegar, bacon and to give it an added BBQ flavor, liquid smoke.

With just 5 ingredients, this BBQ cheddar bacon grilled potatoes recipe can be grilled in a disposable foil roasting pan right on the grill. The recipe can always be adapted for the oven.
